Understanding T1 Bonds
What is the T1 Shipping Note?
The T1 document is crucial for customs clearance when transporting goods across international borders, particularly for items coming from outside the EU to EU destinations. Issued by customs at the point of departure, the T1 process remains active until the shipment arrives at its final EU location, with a maximum transit period of 8 days. For goods arriving from non-EU countries that haven’t been cleared for free circulation, trading within the EU requires payment of VAT and import duties. The T1 document addresses this issue. This article explores the T1 customs document, providing insights for efficient freight clearance in the EU.
How Does the T1 Document Work?
Those managing the transit must provide a guarantee for the payment of customs taxes, duties, and other fees if T1 document requirements are not met. This guarantee is often offered by independent entities like banks, which share liability with the principal.
Each T1 declaration must be submitted electronically via the NCTS (New Computerised Transit) System. Although the process is mainly digital, a paper document known as the TAD (Transit Accompanying Document) must accompany the goods during transit. This document needs to be presented at both the Office of Transit and the final Office of Destination upon arrival.
The TAD includes an MRN (Movement Reference Number) generated by the electronic system when the declaration is accepted. The MRN appears in both barcode and numerical formats. The customs process concludes once the goods reach their destination, at which point any taxes and duties are due.
When Do You Need a T1 Shipping Note?
You will need the T1 document in the following situations:
- Transporting goods produced in a non-EU country through an EU country to a final EU destination.
- Moving non-EU manufactured goods through an EU country with uncertainty about their final destination.
- Transporting non-EU manufactured goods through the EU that will be held under customs control.
What Information Does the T1 Document Include?
The T1 document is carefully compiled and contains details about the shipment, such as the names of the consignee and consignor, total package weight, quantity of packages, seal numbers, tariff codes, and other relevant information.
This information ensures smooth tracking of goods from sender to recipient during transit and supports a successful customs clearance process.
